Musician
Jan originally wanted to be a guitarist, but a schoolfriend had
an electric guitar for sale 'cheap', and being iboth impatient and
ignorant, Jan bought it for £30 - a Jedson bass. Nonetheless,
now owning this reliable if not great bass, Jan was determined to
master it. he used the tried and trusted method of listening very
carefully to old Beatles record and slowly repeating what he could
hear McCartney doing until he got it off pat - this meant endless
hours of bleeding finer tips and an innate understanding of all
the seperate parts for all instruments on Sergeant Pepper's lonely
Hearts Club Band - but he got there.
A friend at school was a natural guitarist - there was very little
even then that he could not play - and once he knew he couldn't
play it, he would quickly learn and surpass any difficulties he
met. Jan was still at this time a very mediocre bassist - solid,
but hardly inspiring - but they both had a good ear, Jan could sing
while his friend could not - they both wanted to write and so naturally
gravitated toward each other - they're still friends over 40 years
later, now seperated only by distance. They would write and play
together, and Jan would always willingly lend a hand with his friends
projects and group(s) - but there paths were destined for seperate
routes. |
